The house got quiet after you packed your bags

Your boots by the doorway, your old army tag

Mama tried smiling, but her eyes turned red

I still hear your last words running through my head

You said, “Be strong now, take care of your mom”

But the nights feel colder now that you’re gone

I wait by the window every single day

Hoping somehow you’ll still find your way

And I still save a seat at the table for you

Even though everybody says you’re never coming through

I got your picture hanging by my bed

Talking to the silence instead

They folded your flag, but they can’t fold my pain

Every time it rains, I hear your name

You left for the army, but part of me stayed

With the dad who never came home that day

Your old guitar still leans against the wall

Sometimes I swear I can hear you call

I wear your jacket when the nights get cold

Trying to feel the warmth I used to hold

People say time heals everything

But time just taught me how to miss you more

I’d trade every birthday, every Christmas light
