Ashes in the Choir

[Intro]

Cold pews

Cracked stone

Candles

Burn low

[Verse 1]

You said my name

In the dust of the rafters

Every stained-glass saint

Turned their eyes to disaster

I wore my sins

Like a borrowed black dress

Lipstick prayers

On a trembling breath

[Chorus]

I am crawling through the ashes in the choir (in the choir)

Every hallelujah tangled in the wire

If this is how I break

Then let me break in fire

Tear my shadow from the wall

I am waking in the ashes of it all

[Verse 2]

You tear your throat

Just to feel something living

Every bitter note

Is a cracked amen you're giving

You hold that rope

Like a half-remembered vow

Say you want to rise

But you love the fall somehow

[Chorus]

I am crawling through the ashes in the choir (can you hear me?)

Every hallelujah tangled in the wire

If this is how I break

Then let me break in fire

Tear my shadow from the wall

I am waking in the ashes of it all

[Bridge]

[Drop to piano and soft vocal]

I was never holy

Just hungry

Just haunted

A pulse in the dark

That the dead still wanted

(Do you want me?)

[Band slowly builds]

Lift my jaw from the ground

Teach this scream to be a sound

If grace is a wound

Then cut me open now

[Chorus]

I am crawling through the ashes in the choir (choir calling)

Every hallelujah tangled in the wire

If this is how I break

Then let me break in fire

Tear my shadow from the wall

I am waking in the ashes of it all

[Outro]

One breath

White light

Two hearts

Take flight (oh)
