Ashtrays and Alibis

[Verse 1]

Burnt coffee on the counter

Same cup from yesterday

Half-warmed

Half-forgotten

Just like the things you’d say

Your jacket on the chair back

Still smells like your perfume

I sit here chain-smokin’ questions

In this one-chair living room

[Chorus]

It’s just ashtrays and alibis

Excuses in a rising haze

I keep replaying every goodbye

Till your shadow starts to fade

I’d trade every drag I’m taking

For one more honest try

But all I’ve got tonight

Are ashtrays and alibis

[Verse 2]

There’s a dent where your key hung

Bare nail in the doorframe

I trace it with these shaking hands

Swear I’ll never drink again

But there’s a barstool with my name

And a lighter in my jeans

I light up my regrets

Watch them curl in nicotine

[Chorus]

It’s just ashtrays and alibis

Excuses in a rising haze

I keep replaying every goodbye

Till your shadow starts to fade

I’d trade every drag I’m taking

For one more honest try

But all I’ve got tonight

Are ashtrays and alibis

[Bridge]

I said I’d quit

I said I’d change (yeah)

You heard it all before

Now it’s me and this blue-grey blame

And your boots by the door

If I could breathe you back again

On this bitter

Bitter night

I’d crush every cigarette

Just to hold you tight

[Chorus]

It’s just ashtrays and alibis

Excuses in a rising haze

I keep replaying every goodbye

Till your shadow starts to fade

I’d trade every drag I’m taking

For one more honest try

But all I’ve got tonight

Are ashtrays and alibis

Yeah all I’ve got tonight

Are ashtrays and alibis
