Backroads In My Rearview

[Verse 1]

Coffee in a paper cup

Momma’s voice on the voicemail

Sayin’ “son

When you comin’ up?”

Old town in the rearview

Same fights on the same old streets

I was choking on the small talk

So I threw my life in the backseat

[Chorus]

I’m chasin’ down an open sky

Two-lane ribbon

Goodbye

Goodbye

Every mile

I feel that weight fall through

Backroads in my rearview glass

Turnin’ all those ghosts to past

Rollin’ out of who I was

Into something new

I ain’t runnin’ from my life

I’m just drivin’ it with you

[Verse 2]

Caught you at that truck stop

Laughin’ at the TV news

Grease stains on your work shirt

Sayin’ “hell

I got somethin’ to lose”

You climbed in

No hesitation

Tossed your bag on my old guitar

Said

“I’ve been prayin’ for an exit”

Now here we are

[Chorus]

We’re chasin’ down an open sky

Two-lane ribbon

Goodbye

Goodbye

Every mile

We feel that weight fall through

Backroads in our rearview glass

Turnin’ all those ghosts to past

Rollin’ out of who we were

Into something new

We ain’t runnin’ from our life

We’re just drivin’ it

Me and you

[Bridge]

One day we’ll pull over

Find a porch

Paint it blue

Tell some kid the same old stories

How we almost stayed

But chose the view

Of an

[Chorus]

Open sky we had to find

Two-lane ribbon

Goodbye

Goodbye

Every mile

We let that old hurt lose

Backroads in our rearview glass

Turnin’ all those ghosts to past

Rollin’ out of who we were

Into something true

We ain’t runnin’ from our life

We’re just drivin’ it

(me and you)
