Muddy Shoes by the Door

A child's muddy shoes by the door after soccer practice

Little footprints trailing in from the evening light

Laces half undone, grass still stuck to the sides

Proof of a busy day and a heart still running bright

Muddy shoes by the door

Tells me you were out there chasing mine

Laughing in the rain, fronting to the field, coming home tired

But the world's still spinning real

Knees full of earth, cheeks lit up with sweat

A whistle in the distance, a last game won or lost

I'll wipe the floor and leave the lamp on low

All your stories fill the kitchen like a stream after frost

Nutty shoes by the door

Tells me you were out there chasing one

Laughing in the rain, racing through the fields, coming home tired

With the world still spinning real
