Smoke After Midnight

Rain writes silver on the window

I move slow through the neon blue

Your name drifts in the static glow

Like a roman, forgot to leave by two

I'm a shadow in the half-light

Breathing soft with a night moon

Smoked a heart in a blacked out skyline

Talking low, moving like I know

The trumpet bends in a distant alley

And the bass keeps a patient pulse

Every thought comes back dusty and lonely

Every line falls loose then dissolves

I'm a shadow in the headlights

Breathing soft where the night won't go

Smoked out hard in a blacked out skyline

Talking low, moving like I know

I wear the dark like a second skin

Let the rain blur the shape I keep

If you ask where the truth begins

It's under the smoke, half buried deep

I'm a shadow in the half-life

Breathing soft where the night won't go

Smoked up hard in a bled-out skyline

Talking low, moving like I know
