Tangled in the Middle

[Verse 1]

I washed your shirt

Hung it by the back door

You walked right past

Like you’d never worn it before

You say you’re fine

But your keys shake in your hand

I joke about leaving

You ask if I already planned

[Chorus]

We’re tangled in the middle

Too close to cut it loose

Too far from how it started

When it felt like simple truth

Your hand on my shoulder

But your heart’s in the rearview

We’re tangled in the middle

And I’m scared to pull on you

[Verse 2]

You sleep turned over

Phone face down on the floor

I count the quiet

Like I’m keeping some kind of score

You say you love me

Then you vanish for a while

I trace your footsteps

In the dust of every mile

[Chorus]

We’re tangled in the middle

Too close to cut it loose

Too far from how it started

When it felt like simple truth

Your hand on my shoulder

But your heart’s in the rearview

We’re tangled in the middle

And I’m scared to pull on you

[Bridge]

Tell me

Are you staying

Or just scared to be alone (oh-oh)

I’m tired of guessing

Where your mind keeps going

If this is gonna break us

Let it break right now

Say you’re in

Or let me out

[Chorus]

We’re tangled in the middle

Too close to cut it loose

Too far from how it started

When it felt like simple truth

If you’re holding on empty

I’d rather know it than assume

We’re tangled in the middle

So choose me or cut me loose (hey)

We’re tangled in the middle

Baby

Choose me or cut me loose
