Backroad Apologies

[Verse 1]

You left your jacket on my chair

Coffee stain on your favorite shirt

We always swore we'd take more care

But we just dove in headfirst

Empty bottles by the backdoor

Your lipstick on a paper cup

Every time we said "no more"

We found a way to mess it up

[Pre-Chorus]

I still hear your bare feet on my hardwood floor

Laughing as you said you wouldn't do this anymore

[Chorus]

'Cause we were bad timing, good intentions

Two hearts stuck in the wrong direction

You said "forever" in the front seat, crying

I said "I'm fine" but baby, I was lying

Now I'm driving past your street, same sky above

Backroad apologies

For our messy love

Your friends said I was hard to hold

Mine said you were a wildfire spark

We burned hot, but the smoke got cold

Left your name carved in my dash and in my heart

[Pre-Chorus]

You were singing off key to my old CD

I was thinking this is everything I'll ever need

[Chorus]

But we were bad timing, good intentions

Two hearts stuck in the wrong direction

You said "forever" in the front seat, crying

I said "I'm fine" but baby, I was lying

Now I'm driving past your street, same sky above

Backroad apologies

For our messy love

[Bridge]

If I could turn it all back down

Trade every shout for a softer sound

I'd hold you steady, I'd grow you trust

Not let my pride speak over us (oh-oh)

[Chorus]

We were bad timing, good intentions

Two hearts pulled in a hundred directions

You said "forever" with your hands still shaking

I let you go while my heart was breaking

Now I'm talking to the dark, same sky above

Backroad apologies

For our messy love

Just backroad apologies

For our messy love
