Backroads In The Rearview

[Intro]

[Harmonica wail fading

Guitar eases in]

[Verse 1]

Saturday sun in the side-view glass

Dust on the dash and an old torn map

Your name carved deep in the cottonwood rail

Wind in the window

Chasing our trail

[Chorus]

Backroads in the rearview

Fading like a small-town sign

You were leaning on my shoulder

Saying

"Boy

We got time"

But the fields roll into shadows

And the radio’s all we knew

I'm driving on

But I still see you

Backroads in the rearview

[Verse 2]

Gas station coffee in a paper cup

Laughing at the foam that never showed up

Your boots on the dash

Paint on your jeans

Talking 'bout a house we’d never quite seen

[Chorus]

Backroads in the rearview

Fading like a small-town sign

You were leaning on my shoulder

Saying

"Boy

We got time"

Now the nights feel a little longer

Every mile pulls me through

I'm driving on

But I still see you

Backroads in the rearview

[Bridge]

I pass that county line

The one we swore we'd cross together

Your sweater in the backseat

Holding on to borrowed weather

I reach for your hand in the dark

Out of habit

Out of truth

Find nothing but the steering wheel and echoes of our youth

[Chorus]

Backroads in the rearview

Fading like a small-town sign

You were leaning on my shoulder

Saying

"Boy

We got time"

All these miles on the odometer

Can’t outrun that quiet blue

I'm driving on

But I still see you

Backroads in the rearview
