Candles for the Crossing

I light a candle at the window

For the names my heart still knows

Paper marigolds are trembling

In the amber evening glow

I walk softly through the doorway

Where the shadows learn my face

And the night begins to open

Like a memory in lace

Between the memory and moonlight

I can hear the old love stay

Past the veil and through the silence

You are never far away

So I sing your names in candlelight

Let the dark become the dawn

And in the hush of falling starlight

All we lost comes walking on

There are footsteps in the branches

There are whispers in the rain

Every photograph grows warmer

When I speak your name again

The marimba holds your laughter

In the bones of every home

And the wind across the courtyard

Feels like your returning song

Between the memory and moonlight

I can hear the old love stay

Past the veil and through the violence

You are never far away

So I sing your names in candlelight

Let the dark become the dawn

And in the hush of falling starlight

What we lost comes walking home

If I reach for you in dreaming

Will the distance fall apart?

I can feel you near the ember

Beating gently in my heart

Every flame becomes a doorway

Every tear a silver thread

And the love that once was silence

Rises softly from the tap

Between the moon and moonlight

I can hear the old love's stare

Past the veil and through the silence

You are never far away

So I sing an ace in candlelight

Let the dark become the dawn

And in the hush of falling starlight

What we lost comes walking on
