Old Boards, Open Tuning

[Intro]

[floor creak fading into guitar]

House sighs once

Then it settles

My heel on the board

Finds your echo

[Verse 1]

Dust in the doorway

Boots by the wall

Coffee ring ghosts

On the old pine table

Your coat on the back hook

Still threads in the sleeve

I walk these same four planks

They answer my feet

[Chorus]

Every old board remembers you

Low and long

It calls your name

I stay here

A solitary drifter

Circling the frame

If I stand real still in the kitchen

I swear I feel your weight come through

Every old board remembers you

I just listen for the proof

[Verse 2]

Map tacked crooked

Roads we never drove

Your note in the margin

“Turn east when it snows”

The kettle sings softly

Like it’s humming your tune

I pace that thin groove

Between sink and broom

[Chorus]

Every old board remembers you

Low and long

It calls your name

I stay here

A solitary drifter

Circling the frame

If I stand real still in the hallway

I swear I feel your weight come through

Every old board remembers you

I just lean into the groove

[Bridge]

Maybe I’ll go when the frame gives out

When the grain lets go of your name

Till then I follow each tired line

Like a map I’m scared to change

[Chorus]

Every old board remembers you

Low and long

It calls your name

I stay here

A solitary drifter

Circling the frame

If I lie right here in the bedroom

Between the two dips carved by us two

Every old board remembers you

And it’s all that pulls me through
