Red Clay On My Knees

[Intro]

[Organ drone swelling… 2.5 seconds

Then band hits in]

[Verse 1]

Been a mean man

Tongue like a rusted nail

Raised my voice at angels

Watched good love turn pale

I got bottles in the backyard

Names I can’t recall

But it’s your face

Lord

Hanging on my bedroom wall

[Chorus]

Got red clay on my knees

Beggin’ you

Please

Don’t turn away

I’ve been runnin’ with the fire

Now I’m tired

I’m done with the games

If there’s a river still left

For the worst of the rest like me

Let it rise

Let it rise

Over red clay on my knees (yeah)

[Verse 2]

Mama’s Bible

Still open on page one-two-three

Said

“Boy

You ain’t no lost cause

You just scared of bein’ free”

I hear her in my ribcage

Every time that thunder rolls

Like a porch light

Callin’ back a busted soul

[Chorus]

Got red clay on my knees

Beggin’ you

Please

Don’t turn away

I’ve been runnin’ with the fire

Now I’m tired

I’m done with the games

If there’s a river still left

For the worst of the rest like me

Let it rise

Let it rise

Over red clay on my knees

[Bridge]

I laid my lies on the altar (oh)

I laid my pride in the dirt (yeah)

If grace got room for a stray dog

Let him in

Let him in

Even if it hurts

[Chorus]

Got red clay on my knees

Beggin’ you

Please

Don’t turn away

I’ve been runnin’ with the fire

Now I’m tired

I’m done with the games

If there’s a river still left

For the worst of the rest like me

Let it rise

Let it rise

Over red clay on my knees (on my knees)

Let it rise

Let it rise

Over red clay on my knees
