Gravel on My Tongue

[Verse 1]

Used to wake up mad at the morning

Half a bottle sittin’ by the bed

Mama’s Bible folded at the corners

I’d walk past it, shake my head

Dust on my boots, shame on my shoulders

Prayin’ for a fight, not a sign

Talkin’ like a king in the corner

But I was broke in my own mind

[Chorus]

I got gravel on my tongue, but I still pray

Every broken word, I send it up anyway

I was knee-deep in the dark, now I’m standin’ in the flame

If He can use a mess like me

Then there’s mercy in your name

Yeah, there’s mercy in your name (oh yeah)

[Verse 2]

Pulled that truck off on the shoulder

Screamed my secrets at the sky

Thought the thunder might answer

Only heard my own lies

Then a quiet like a blanket

Wrapped around my wild heart

Felt a hand I couldn’t see

Pull me back from fallin’ apart

[Chorus]

I got gravel on my tongue, but I still pray

Every broken word, I send it up anyway

I was knee-deep in the dark, now I’m standin’ in the flame

If He can use a mess like me

Then there’s mercy in your name

Yeah, there’s mercy in your name

[Bridge]

I ain’t perfect, I’m in progress (hey!)

Still slip, still cuss, still bleed

But I’m learnin’ how to lay down

What was always crushin’ me

If you’re ridin’ with that hurt

Feelin’ chained to what you’ve done

There’s a place at this old table

Come and taste a little love

[Chorus]

I got gravel on my tongue, but I still pray

Every broken word, I send it up anyway

I was knee-deep in the dark, now I’m dancin’ in the flame

If He can use a mess like me

Brother, sister, say your name

There’s redemption in your name (woah)

Yeah, there’s mercy in your name
