Future Tense, Past Life

[Intro]

You hit me like a flashback

Polaroid in my mind

We were living in a throwback

But the clock rewinds

[Verse 1]

You in that old band tee

Lost in a new-age glow

Laughing at some bad movie

Like the world moved slow

I still taste cherry cola

On a cracked red straw

You were tracing constellations

On my bedroom wall

[Chorus]

We were future tense

Past life

Dancing on the edge of a deadline

Didn’t know the moment was a headline

Running through my head for years

We were out of style

On time

Golden on a Tuesday skyline

Didn’t know that you would be the tagline

Echoing above my fears

Future tense

Past life

Still playing in my ears

[Verse 2]

You said

“Call me when you’re older”

Like a half-true dare

I got busy getting colder

Breathing filtered air

But your name lights up my screen

Every time I dream

Like a message never sent

In a midnight scene

[Chorus]

We were future tense

Past life

Dancing on the edge of a deadline

Didn’t know the moment was a headline

Running through my head for years

We were out of style

On time

Golden on a Tuesday skyline

Didn’t know that you would be the tagline

Echoing above my fears

Future tense

Past life

Still playing in my ears

[Bridge]

Tell me

Are you still that kid

With the wild ideas

Or did you trade your favorite sins

For a safer career

If I saw you in the doorway

Would the room stand still

Or would we just smile politely

Like we never will

[Chorus]

We were future tense

Past life

Dancing on the edge of a deadline

Didn’t know the moment was a headline

Running through my head for years

We were out of style

On time

Golden on a Tuesday skyline

Didn’t know that you would be the tagline

Echoing above my fears

Future tense

Past life

Still playing in my ears
