Halfway Past Forever

[Verse 1]

Clock on the oven

Blinking wrong

Same three digits all week long

Takeout boxes on the counter

Dust on the picture of us at the water

You in that thrift store sweater

Laughing at something I can’t remember

I keep rewinding that summer in my head

Till it skips

Then jumps ahead

[Chorus]

We were halfway past forever

Stuck in traffic on your street

Talking big plans

Smaller secrets

Feet on the dash

Tangled in the heat

Now these days just fold together

Like old notes in the backseat

I keep living in the middle

Of a memory that won’t repeat

[Verse 2]

Friends all married

Moving states

New last names on their gates

I’m still here in the same old place

Different plants

Same window frame

Your mug’s still hiding on the top shelf

Cracked blue rim

Chipped like myself

I drink from it when the rain runs long

Tastes like distance

Feels like home

[Chorus]

We were halfway past forever

Stuck in traffic on your street

Talking big plans

Smaller secrets

Feet on the dash

Tangled in the heat

Now these days just fold together

Like old notes in the backseat

I keep living in the middle

Of a memory that won’t repeat

Chasing shadows from another year

Every what-if buzzing in the corners

Every version where you’re still here

You said

“Time will tell”

But time don’t talk

It just turns my phone

At the end of your quiet street

Now my days just blur together

Soft and slow like late TV

I keep living in the middle

Of a memory that won’t repeat (won’t repeat)

Yeah

I’m stuck in the middle

Of a you-and-me that’s out of reach
