Red Kite, Free Again

A little red kite spun into the afternoon sky

Caught on a lamppost where the long shadows lie

Tiny hands reached up, heart thumping with fear

Then a breeze came smiling and the line grew clear

Fly, red kite, fly over the streetlight glow

Up where the soft wind loves to go

From a cane-gloved moment to a shining release

Lift, red dirt, lift and sail in peace

Child held a breath, then laughed at the sky

As the paper bird rose where the sparrows fly

One snag, one took, one hopeful hand

And suddenly freedom bloomed across the land

Fly, red kite, fly over the streetlight glow

Up where the soft wind loves to go

From a tangled moment to a shining release

Lift, red kite, lift and sail in peace

Every day can catch on something small

But tiny sensations can answer the call

A little red ribbon against the blue

Reminds us what a hopeful wind can do

Fly red kite, fly over the streetlight glow

Up where the soft wind loves to go

From a tangled moment to a shining release

Lift a red kite, lift and sail in peace
